Season 3 begins with some of the characters still dealing with the dramatic events of the Season 2 finale, which saw the manipulative prisoner Vee apparently killed while trying to escape, and Piper engineering the return to prison of Alex (Laura Prepon), on a parole violation. The prison setting forces people who would ordinarily never cross paths to interact, and the show makes the most of the friction and connections created by the characters' interplay. Showrunner Jenji Kohan and the other writers are smart enough to know the real strength of "Orange is the New Black" is the diversity of its superb cast. After everything she's been through, Piper's wised up, which is a relief, and her travails are just part of the larger story, which is an improvement. Piper is no longer our guide to the world of Litchfield Penetentiary, the wide-eyed, self-absorbed fish out of water. If Season 1 was flawed by having the annoyingly entitled yuppie-turned-prisoner Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) at the center, and Season 2 was often dark and disturbing, Season 3 is an utterly confident mix of gritty comedy and affecting, underplayed drama. Now that I've gotten my venting out of the way, Season 3 of "Orange is the New Black" is on track to be the best season yet, no matter how fast, or slow, you watch it. And while there's nothing stopping anyone from watching that way, what tends to get lost is the synchronized, post-episode group gab ritual.
But each episode brings enough new developments, surprises, or terrific moments between characters that, to my mind, it would be even more satisfying to watch everything unfold week by week.

The first six episodes of "Orange is the New Black" Season 3 are, it's true, so immediately engrossing it's not hard to zip through them. But as Netflix continues to ramp up their original series, the idea of streaming episode after episode of a half-dozen shows begins to feel less like entertainment, and more like homework. Once again, all the episodes will be available for streaming on Netflix that day, so fans can dip in and out depending on their own schedules, and relative degrees of "OITNB" obsession.
Binge-watchers will rejoice that "Orange is the New Black" returns for Season 3 on June 12.
