Season 3 begins with some of the characters still dealing with the dramatic events of the Season 2 finale, which saw the manipulative prisoner Vee apparently killed while trying to escape, and Piper engineering the return to prison of Alex (Laura Prepon), on a parole violation. The prison setting forces people who would ordinarily never cross paths to interact, and the show makes the most of the friction and connections created by the characters' interplay. Showrunner Jenji Kohan and the other writers are smart enough to know the real strength of "Orange is the New Black" is the diversity of its superb cast. After everything she's been through, Piper's wised up, which is a relief, and her travails are just part of the larger story, which is an improvement. Piper is no longer our guide to the world of Litchfield Penetentiary, the wide-eyed, self-absorbed fish out of water. If Season 1 was flawed by having the annoyingly entitled yuppie-turned-prisoner Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) at the center, and Season 2 was often dark and disturbing, Season 3 is an utterly confident mix of gritty comedy and affecting, underplayed drama. Now that I've gotten my venting out of the way, Season 3 of "Orange is the New Black" is on track to be the best season yet, no matter how fast, or slow, you watch it. And while there's nothing stopping anyone from watching that way, what tends to get lost is the synchronized, post-episode group gab ritual.

But each episode brings enough new developments, surprises, or terrific moments between characters that, to my mind, it would be even more satisfying to watch everything unfold week by week.

The first six episodes of "Orange is the New Black" Season 3 are, it's true, so immediately engrossing it's not hard to zip through them. But as Netflix continues to ramp up their original series, the idea of streaming episode after episode of a half-dozen shows begins to feel less like entertainment, and more like homework. That said, I love being able to record a show or access it on demand if I can't watch it when it first airs. Would moments like last week's jaw-dropping battle at Hardhome feel as special if everyone saw them at different times? I don't think so. I love the marination." For another example, think of the passionate gabfests that go on between "Game of Thrones" episodes. If he did a show with Netflix, Weiner said during an appearance at the New York Public Library in May, "I would try and convince them to let me just roll them out so that there was at least some shared experience." Having to wait a week to see what happens next gives us time to reflect on a show, as well as enjoy back-and-forth conversations, arguments, and half-baked theories. As Weiner said a few days after the "Mad Men" finale - which inspired endless discussion about the meaning of it all - he's not a fan of binge-viewing. on Sunday nights.) And then we spent the rest of the week debating plot points, second-guessing creative choices, speculating about what might happen next, and wondering why Don did this, or Joan did that. We tuned in at the same time (or at least the next day, for those who couldn't stay up until 11 p.m. A huge part of the pleasure of watching "Mad Men" was the communal nature of it. Say what you will about "Mad Men," and how over-the-top fans and critics could get about parsing every particle of every episode for meaning, but Matthew Weiner got one thing absolutely right. The first six episodes made available for preview are so good, and engage us with so many characters in this peerless ensemble, that the only way it could be better is if viewers could talk amongst ourselves in the week between new episodes. But at the risk of being a killjoy, I wish the show was airing every week. Once again, all the episodes will be available for streaming on Netflix that day, so fans can dip in and out depending on their own schedules, and relative degrees of "OITNB" obsession.
